The Home She Deserves Foundation builds cooperative housing communities and wraparound support that help working single mothers in New York City reach stability, independence, and — eventually — a home of her own.
We're a young organization currently completing our 501(c)(3) incorporation — read more in "Ways to Support" below.
We build supportive, cooperative housing communities and wraparound resources that help working single mothers in New York City achieve stability, independence, and ultimately, homeownership — for themselves and their children.
A New York City where no working mother has to raise her children without a community behind her, and where single motherhood is never a barrier to a safe, stable, permanent home.
Employed single mothers in the NYC metro area — stable enough to work full-time, precarious enough that one setback (a lost shift, a rent hike) can undo years of progress.
Working single mothers routinely fall between every system built for housing stability. There's rarely a middle path. We built one.
| Housing model | What it solves | What it doesn't solve |
|---|---|---|
| Emergency / transitional shelter | Crisis safety and case management | Often restricts full-time work scheduling, has stay-length limits, and isn't built for cost-splitting between working parents |
| Fully independent market apartment | Autonomy and privacy | Full cost burden on one income, total isolation, no built-in childcare backup |
| Cooperative "Mommune" housing | Shared cost of housing and utilities, a built-in peer childcare network, reduced isolation, a structured path toward move-out and ownership | Requires real setup — this is why we're building it deliberately, in phases |
A safe, shared-living community where mothers support one another, reduce housing stress, and move — together — toward long-term independence.
Mothers join a supportive shared-living program.
Affordable housing and a safe community reduce housing stress.
Moms receive support, resources, budgeting guidance, and homeownership education.
The goal is independence, and eventually, a home of her own.
Sequenced deliberately — starting with what builds community fastest, building toward what changes a family's trajectory permanently.
Shared residences where mother-headed households split rent, utilities, and household responsibilities — each retaining a private space.
A members-only network where verified mothers request and offer help — babysitting swaps, school pickups, errands.
A coaching track that moves a mother from rent-burdened to mortgage-ready — budgeting, credit repair, matched savings.
Real conversations with single mothers about what they need and the policy gaps they live inside — giving an unheard population a public voice.
Our ideal initial participant is intentionally defined — a clear picture makes both our support and our eligibility screening honest and real.
We're pre-launch and building from zero — which means every early supporter has an outsized impact on what this becomes.
